The Area

DSC00147Springbank Guest House is located right in the heart of Mallaig overlooking harbour. Our guests are treated to stunning sea views from sunrise to sunset.

The picture-postcard town of Mallaig is the main Fishing port on the West Coast of Scotland and is known as the Southern Gateway to the Isles.

The area has a strong historical past for fishing. During its peak in the 1960’s Mallaig was regarded as the busiest herring Port in Europe. Now only a few of the original Smokehouses exist which are well worth a visit.

Seafood lovers, in particular, will be spoilt for choice of places to eat with most restaurants offering fresh locally sourced seafood prepared and served in a range of traditional and modern ways.

Throughout the year you can travel by train on the West Highland Railway line and take in magical views of the rugged Highland landscape. During the summer months Mallaig operates a truly magical railway experience between Fort William and Mallaig on the “Hogwarts Express” steam train, made famous by the Hollywood blockbuster movie Harry Potter.

Just a few miles south of Mallaig is the small village of Morar. Morar Beach, known as ‘The Silver Sands of Morar” is truly stunning and offers sightseers some spectacular views and a great leisurely day out. To continue with the movie trivia Morar Beach and the surrounding area feratured heavily in the films Local Hero and Breaking Waves.

Morar is also home to Loch Morar, the fifth largest loch in Scotland, which is also the deepest Fresh Water Body in the British Isles.
